Juniper is a tree species mainly found in countries north of the equator, such as Albania, where doTERRA's Juniper Berry essential oil comes from.
A single juniper tree can live up to 200 years. These trees are shrub-like, evergreen conifers. Coniferous trees, as their name suggests, are covered with needle-shaped leaves. Since juniper is an evergreen plant species, it retains its needles all year round. This tree species can produce male and female flowers on separate trees. Male flowers are small and yellow, and typically grow near the tips of branches. Female flowers are initially green, then after pollination, they develop into the purple fruit of the juniper, the berry. The essential oil is extracted from these berries. The berries are considered ripe when they turn blue. At this point, they are harvested, and the oil is extracted from them by steam distillation.
