Sourcing
The clove tree requires humid, tropical climatic conditions. It has been cultivated on the island of Madagascar for nearly 200 years.

The clove tree originally comes from Southeast Asia, but there, the vast majority of cultivated cloves are processed by the spice industry. It takes about three years for a clove tree to become fertile, but it can live for more than 100 years. The essential oil is extracted from the flower buds growing on the trees. Shortly before the buds open, their color changes to pale red, which means they are ready for harvest. After the buds are collected, they are dried in the sun. Subsequently, the essential oil is extracted from them by steam distillation.
